
History of MONTREAL
Montreal is the metropolis of Quebec, the center of culture and business.It is the second largest city in Canada after Toronto, and it is also the largest French-speaking city in America. Much of the city is located on the island of Montreal in the Hochelaga Archipelago, along the St. Lawrence, near Ontario and the United States.
Montreal hosted the 1967 World’s Fair and the 1976 Summer Olympics. It is the annual host of the World Film Festival, the International Jazz Festival of Montreal,Just for Laughs, the Montreal High Lights Festival and the Grand Prix of Canada 1. The hockey club of the Montreal Canadiens are an address from its inception in 1909. Its historic district, Old Montreal, was declared a historic district in 1964.
Montreal is widely regarded as the second largest francophone city in the world after Paris (2.1 million people), although, considering the speakers and not individuals whose mother tongue is French, Kinshasa and Abidjan are speaking more cities populated. Its population is more than triple that of Quebec, the provincial capital.
In 2011, the city had 1,649,515 inhabitants, and its metropolitan area nearly four million. In 2006, approximately 53% of its population was of French culture and language, 13% were culture and English language and 34% was from another culture and making Montreal an intercultural city.
