History of AHUNTSIC
According to legend, a young Huron Ahuntsic was converted to Christianity. This theory was disproved in 1942 by Father Archange Godbout , who demonstrated qu’Ahuntsic was the nickname ( deformation ” Auhaitsique “) that the Hurons gave a French arrived in 1619 in New France , who accompanied the father Viel its missions in Huronia from 1623.
He died in the part of the Rivière des Prairies now called Sault au Recollect with his mentor in 1625.
From 1695 the Sulpician erect a fort at Sault -au- Récollet in order to protect the settlers and secure the fur market.
Was erected in 1751 the Church of the Visitation, which remains today. The Municipality of Sault -au- Récollet was founded on l July 1845 and became the city of Sault -au- Récollet February 19, 1914. It was annexed to Montreal December 22, 1916. Finally, what remained of the territory of the parish of Sault -au- Récollet was incorporated as a town under the name of Montreal -Nord, March 5, 1915.
In the nineteenth century, three villages are implanted on the banks of the Rivière des Prairies, along the coast path Bord- de- water (now Gouin Boulevard) westward: Cartierville (the first – to -Plouffe at the origin), the Big Falls and Back River, which in 1897 became the city of Ahuntsic. All these villages except Saraguay, be annexed to Montreal before the First World War. Sleepers will connect the coast Île Jésus, the location of existing bridges. The charms of the river on the banks soon attracted wealthy from Montreal’s Golden Square Mile who choose Gouin Boulevard as a resort.
In 1959, construction of the Henri- Bourassa Boulevard disrupts this peaceful corner between the shoreline of the rest of the city.
Finally, on 1 January 2006, this area is integrated into the current Ahuntsic-Cartierville borough.
