History of ANJOU
Until the 50s, the area that will occupy Anjou is mainly used for agriculture. Residential development and urbanization of the city from the mid-1950s the small parish of a few hundred people passed a suburb of thousands of people in the 60s.
The city of Anjou was formed on 23 February 1956, after the separation of the parish of Saint -Léonard- de-Port -Maurice and the parish of Long Point , the territory of the parish of Saint- Leonard de-Port -Maurice became the new municipality of Anjou .
The construction of the Anjou interchange where highways intersect the Metropolitan Highway 25 and the creation of a huge industrial park and the construction of the shopping center Les Galeries d’Anjou in the 1960s contributed to an accelerated development of the territory. The municipality of Anjou, who had 9,500 inhabitants in the late 1950s, in hosts over 30,000 in the early 1970s.
The name of the city was chosen in honor of Anjou, historical province of France, which were from the first settlers, the founder of Ville-Marie, Jérôme Le Royer, Sieur de La Dauversière .
Since the municipal mergers of 2002, the city of Anjou was merged with the city of Montreal and the territory became the borough of Anjou. In 2004, a referendum proposing the demerger of Anjou of the City of Montreal was held, but does not reach the threshold of 35% stake necessary.
In 2006, Anjou celebrated its fiftieth anniversary.
