HOUSE CONDO DUPLEX TRIPLEX FOR SALE COTE-DES-NEIGES

History of COTE-DES-NEIGES

It is April 8, 1698, the Surveyor of the King of France Gideon Catalonia measured and confined 34 lots on a terrace of the northwest slope of Mount Royal. Lands were established perpendicular to stream down to the Rivière des Prairies.

The presence of the creek allowed the cultivation of the mountainside and drew early tanners that earned in Côte-des -Neiges his nickname village tanners.

The tannery was the main industry of this region, the same one for over a century. Without it, the Côte-des -Neige would hardly developed. The stream that ran through the entire north – western slope of Mount Royal drew this industry that requires a lot of water.

The opening of the Chemin de la Côte -des- Neiges in 1862 became de facto access to the coast path Snow became the village of Côte -des- Neiges in the same year (1862). The village of Côte-des- Neiges was in 1889 split into two municipalities and the City of Montreal annexed them in 1908 and 1910. The main path of the former coastline retains the name Chemin de la Côte -des- Neiges.

With the start of construction of the University of Montreal in the 1930s that the Côte-des- Neiges neighborhood takes off. Multiple apartment buildings were built on the street Édouard Montpetit (who was one of the first secular university teachers of the young), and thus the area became more populated. From 1930 were added the Jewish community and many other communities, their arrival reflecting the vagaries of international politics.

It is in this area that Brother André built in 1904, the small chapel dedicated to St. Joseph. It opens the Saint Joseph’s Oratory in 1955. It is the place of the most important pilgrimage dedicated to St. Joseph worldwide.

The Decarie Expressway is open to motorists in 1966, in time for the 1967 World’s Fair. The construction of the highway forced the displacement of 285 families.

Today, the area is very institutional. With 7 hospitals, the University of Montreal and its two affiliated colleges and two reputable private high schools, the neighborhood lives to the rhythm of school sessions.

The area is now the most populous city (over 100,000 inhabitants) in part because it hosts a large number of immigrants.
