History of HAMPSTEAD

April 7, 1914, the founder of the city mayor, James Ballie, held the first meeting of its board in the building trade office on the rue Saint Alexander. It was on this occasion that a check for $ 5,000 was established to cover the incorporation of the city costs.

In 1945, 80 % of residents were Protestant, 16% Catholic and 4% Jews. As early as 1957, only 49 % of residents were Protestant, 22% Catholic and 28% Jewish. As mentioned above, this trend continues to this day.

In 1956, the City has prepared a development plan for 109 acres of virgin land in the north and west areas of the city. The report also articulated the need to develop the golf club 112.5 acres. The plan was presented as a two-step process, involving first the north and west areas, then turn to the golf course itself. The plan was approved and the second phase began in 1970.

The framework Hampstead pushed is a perfect example of the theory of the “Garden City “. The city has proven to be one of the residential districts better appreciated on the island of Montreal. The philosophy of the founders of the city has strict control over its entire arrangement, while encouraging creativity consistent with the framework of this great project.
