History of HOCHELAGA-MAISONNEUVE
Hochelaga name comes from the name of an Indian village which Jacques Cartier discovered in 1535, the presence on the flank of Mount Royal.
The founding of the parish Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Hochelaga back to 1867. Its territory shall extend from Iberville Street to the west, Longue- Pointe neighborhood Vimont Street) to the east. The municipality consists of Hochelaga in 1875. From 1874 to 1883, the implementation of major industries, including the company of Victor Hudon cotton mills, the spinning Sainte -Anne and the tobacco factory WC McDonald, causes a significant growth in the village of Hochelaga.
With this growth, Hochelaga password village status to that city March 30, 1883. However, can it not meet the expenses caused by the necessary construction of streets, sewers, etc.The city was annexed to Montreal during a ceremony December 22, 1883.
However, this is not the whole territory of Hochelaga who is attached. Indeed, some landowners refuse annexation and called for the creation of a new municipality: Town of Maisonneuve was created December 27, 1883. This municipality will extend east of the neighborhood, the street Bourbonnière Viau. The home of former mayor then became the local library, located at the corners of Pie IX Boulevard and Ontario Street.
The area was mainly a residential use and population was mainly in the working class. Its development was nevertheless later. To further facilitate economic development, Maisonneuve is a municipal council and gives industries a tax holiday. It should declare bankruptcy, unable to finance its ambitious. It will be annexed by Montreal in 1918. Maisonneuve Montreal rivaled by its industrial areas. After the closure of several factories in the 1980s, Hochelaga- Maisonneuve had to do with an increase in poverty and unemployment. The 2000s were marked by gentrification.
