History of LACHINE
The first lordship, Côte- Saint- Sulpice, was awarded to René Robert Cavelier de La Salle in 1667. The first French settlers arrived in early 1669.
According to what has been told the name of Lachine is linked to the unsuccessful expedition explorer Cavelier de LaSalle was looking for a passage to China. Upon his return, Montrealers called land Cavelier de La Salle China derisively.
In 1676, there erected a chapel and the parish of the Holy Guardian Angels, the third on the island of Montreal, is founded. In the space of a decade, the population of Lachine than 400 souls.
During the night of 4 to 5 August 1689, the Iroquois, former locals, attacked the village and killed many residents while others were taken prisoner.
The next day, about 80 soldiers came to their rescue are killed or captured. This episode remains known in Canadian history as the massacre of Lachine.
According to the census of 1692, the parish of Lachine has only 260 residents.
The Lachine Canal is opened to navigation in 1825. Gateway to the network of canals linking the Atlantic Ocean in the heart of the continent, the Lachine Canal was the forerunner of the transportation revolution in Canada in the early nineteenth century.
In 1872, Lachine is incorporated city. Over time, the city increases its role in the suburban real estate development to compensate for the closure of the canal in 1959. In addition to being able to develop a more diversified economy, it benefits from recreation and tourism since the reopening of the canal boating in 2002.
Lachine became a borough of the city of Montreal in January 2002, including Ville Saint- Pierre, a small landlocked city absorbed Lachine in 2000 and became a district of the borough of Lachine.
