History of MILE-END
The name of Mile End originates from a racecourse which occupied the last century about space today between the Boulevard Saint- Joseph Street Mentana , avenue du Mont -Royal and Berri . But between this track and the edge of Montreal at the time, which is the height of the current Sherbrooke ( marking the northern boundary of urbanization in the early nineteenth century ) , there is exactly one mile of hence the name Mile end or ” end mile “, which gave the racetrack and later , to the municipality of Saint- Louis -du- Mile- end.
Mile End is officially part of the borough of Plateau- Mont- Royal, Montreal but usually differentiate the two districts, the fact that the Mile End, one of the most bilingual areas of Montreal, is located a few blocks west the heart of the Plateau, mainly francophone.
Its territory is bounded by Hutchison Street to the west, rue Henri Julien and Bullion Street to the east, the Way Canadian Pacific Railway to the north and Mount Royal Avenue to the south.
Fairmount bagels bakeries and St-Viateur bagels are emblematic of the neighborhood.
Recently, Mile End was considered by many specialized music magazines including Spin and Pitchfork, as the heart of the independent music scene in Montreal.
