History of ILE-BIZARD

On 24 October 1678, the government granted Frontenac Island, so named Bonaventure Island in lordship to Jacques Bizard. This date marks the beginning of the history of Île Bizard.

It was not until the second half of the eighteenth century that the occupation of Île Bizard actually starts. Yet there still exists neither town nor church in the island, it then part of the parish of Sainte-Geneviève.

The canonical erection of the parish of St. Raphael dates back to June 10, 1839, construction of the first church and parsonage, 1843.

From 1678 to 1854, the island is a manor belonging to the Bizard-closse family from 1678 to 1765, then Pierre Foretier, from 1765 to 1815. Following a trial to settle the estate of the latter eventually results in 1842, and Marie-Amable Foretier, wife of Denis-Benjamin Viger, then inherited the manor. Denis-Benjamin Viger, prominent politician, hastens to make build a manor house in 1845, then an ordinary mill in 1850. But the seigneurial system was abolished in 1854.

The municipality of the parish of Saint-Raphaël in Île-Bizard, created by law in 1855 replaces the old administrative structure and its first mayor from 1855 to 1873 is Hyacinthe Paquin. It will remain a village municipality until January 1995, when she became the City of L’Île-Bizard.

In June 2004, Île Bizard is integrated into the district L’Île-Bizard-Sainte-Geneviève, in the City of Montreal.
