    History of KIRKLAND

    Once forming the Parish of St- Joachim of Pointe- Claire, the City of Kirkland was founded in civil parish by decree of the King of France March 3, 1722, in the municipality of the parish July 1, 1855 and the 24 municipal corporation March 1961. It is named after Dr. Charles -Aimé Kirkland, Liberal MP for the riding of Jacques -Cartier from 1939 until his death in 1961.

    In the early sixties, the city is found divided into two by the construction of the Trans-Canada Highway across the island of Montreal from east to west, which corresponds to a section of Autoroute Félix -Leclerc. The dynamism of the city is thereby greatly modified and allows the development of a large industrial park generating significant revenue for the city and its residents. Other geographic areas of the city are preserved for the development of residential areas.

    In 2002, the city and several other autonomous municipalities on the Island of Montreal were merged with the city. This ordered by a bill of the Parti Québécois in power fusion will eventually be challenged by a referendum that allowed the city to recover as of January 1, 2006.

    The population of Kirkland , today , has expanded with the arrival of many communities , the two founders , Anglophone and Francophone communities were joined by immigrants from all backgrounds so that today consists of Kirkland citizens from 44 different nationalities, speaking over 31 languages .
