History of OUTREMONT
The name comes from the popular Outremont language. At the time of Ville- Marie was a small town, travel should be made in the travel cart and could be dangerous. People wishing to travel in the countryside, along the Rivière des Prairies, northeast of Montreal, had to go through the Mont- Royal therefore also Mt. Thus this region is designated “off – the – mountain”.
The city of Outremont was born in the late nineteenth century by the initiative of Louis Beaubien, then MP. He resorted to the trick of counting barns and other farm buildings as dwellings in order to achieve the required minimum number of houses for city status. In 1875 the municipality changed its name to Côte Sainte -Catherine Outremont. She obtained her municipality status 20 years later.
Outremont remained an agricultural town for quite some time. It was not until the arrival of the Clerics of St. Viator before seeing a more systematic subdivision (1887). Indeed, the young religious community invited to teach at Montreal by Bishop Ignace Bourget, saw coming suburban sprawl. Clerics had the feeling that the land adjacent to their facilities soon would interest people of the city then brought to ascend to the North. They bought lots of land in order to subdivide and sell at a profit. This also explains why a number of streets are named in connection with the Clerics of Saint Viator.
With the twentieth century, Outremont develops in one breath. During the first thirty years of the century, 2,500 buildings are erected and the city became a major project.
In the early 1940s, the population reached 30,000 people, including an ever-increasing proportion of French Canadians. It is now a sign of social promotion that moved from East to Montreal Outremont, considered the most exclusive island residential site. However, after 1945, the building spaces are scarce in Outremont and the population stabilizes.
On 1 January 2002, merged Outremont in Montreal. It ceases to exist as an independent municipality and became one of the boroughs of the new city.
