History of RIVIERE-DES-PRAIRIES

Rivière des Prairies was formerly known as the Skawanoti, which means the Huron River behind the island. Samuel de Champlain, who will rename the river, in honor of one of his companion, François Prairie, which is lost during an expedition of exploration. The English took over the Indian name and appoint the watercourse Back River.

Until 1671, it was impossible to consider establishing a parish on the side of the Rivière des Prairies, the Iroquois were entering the island of Montreal by the river. To stop the incursions of the Iroquois and strengthen at the same time the tip of the island of Montreal, Dollier Casson, superior of the seminary, Sulpician priest and lord of the island of Montreal erected two fiefs in 1671. He granted land to a number of settlers able to become soldiers as necessary to help the two possessors of fiefs: Carrion Dufresnoy Phillippe and Paul Maurel.

The first granted land located at the end of the island on which the battle took place in Rivière- des-Prairies or Grou, in July 1690 between 25 French and one hundred Iroquois.

The formation of a village began in 1731, two blocks appear west of the church on which stand three houses. Rivière-des -Prairies is unorganized, l July 1845. Between 1929 and 1933, Rivière-des-Prairies get electricity company Montreal Light Heat and Power.

After the war, there was a housing shortage in Montreal and several families settled in the municipality.

In 1954, Rivière-des -Prairies obtained its city status. At that time, it consisted of 6,500 inhabitants. Gradually, the land is sold, residential development increased and thus the demands of citizens became increasingly large: sewerage, water supply, etc. leaving the city of Rivière-des -Prairies debt. It is then placed under trusteeship by the Ministry of Municipal Affairs in July 1961. In 1963, Jean Drapeau, mayor of Montreal, approved the annexation so Rivière-des -Prairies face part of the city of Montreal.

Since 2002 municipal mergers, Rivière-des -Prairies is integrated into the district of Rivière-des -Prairies -Pointe -aux- Trembles.
